Real cops turn tables on fake cop
A man who pretended to be enforcing traffic rules has been detained for alleged fraud, police said yesterday.
Officers at Huanglu Police Station in the Pudong New Area launched an investigation earlier this month after reports that a man in uniform had fined people 150 to 300 yuan (US$22 to US$44) for alleged traffic offenses.
They said the man usually appeared between 2am and 4am.
The suspect appeared on a street surveillance camera on the early morning of January 2.
Most of the victims were vegetable vendors at wet markets who were riding electric tricycles to transport goods, police said.
They usually paid up for fear their vehicles could be seized by the “law enforcer,” police said.
In most of the cases, the suspect appeared on an e-bike, but in one case he drove a car, and through the plate number, police tracked him down on January 8.
The man, Yu, is said to have confessed and told police he had purchased a security guard’s uniform from a shop.
Police, who received reports from six victims, said Yu had admitted to defrauding more than 10 people.
