Return of the Dirty Food Stalls, a sequel
Food inspectors will campaign against unlicensed food stalls again this month to stop them reappearing, authorities said yesterday.
More than 24,000 unlicensed food stores have been closed down this year or given licenses, according to the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.
The city’s food complaints hotline 12331 has received more than 13,000 calls about unlicensed food operations.
However, some unlicensed stalls that had been cleared away may come back again, which demands continual vigilance, said Zhang Zhunmin, deputy director of the administration.
Random checks and undercover investigations between November 26 and 30 will attempt to prevent stalls that have been closed down from rearing their ugly heads again.
Each district is taking different measures to prevent stalls from reappearing.
The Pudong New Area has planted greenery at the former sites of stalls, while Jing’an District is installing surveillance cameras.
