Robot thief jailed for 3 1/2 years

A 29-YEAR-OLD man who stole a robot from a local hospital was sentenced to three and a half years in jail and fined 40,000 yuan (US$5,800) by the Jing’an District People’s Court yesterday.

With local hospitals getting smarter, many have robots to provide basic services like registration of patients. The robot involved in the case was worth nearly 85,000 yuan.

The thief, Zhang Yadong, told police where the robot was hidden, which allowed him to get a lighter sentence.

Zhang stole the robot from the lobby of Shanghai Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine on Zhijiang Road M. on March 17, the court heard.

Police received a report from the hospital’s security guard about it and targeted Zhang after watching the surveillance videos. He was arrested in April. He told police that he saw a doctor at the hospital in early March and noticed the robot, which he believed to be very expensive.
