Runners ready for rainy raceday

The 2018 Shanghai International Marathon will be held on Sunday, featuring a total of 38,000 runners — 25,000 in the 42-kilometer marathon, 6,000 in the 10km event and 7,000 in the 5.5km run.

According to the organizers, nearly 138,000 people applied to take part this year. Apart from quotas given to elite runners who achieved good results in previous years, runners were chosen by drawing lots.

The races start on the Bund and pass along the newly opened Huangpu riverside. The finish line is at Shanghai Stadium. There is a slight adjustment from previous years in the latter part of the course, as runners will go down Longteng Avenue instead of climbing the more challenging Longteng Bridge at the 35km mark.

In their latest innovation, the organizers will provide a 10-second video for each runner of moments from their race using facial recognition technology.

Grey wet weather is forecast for the rest of the week. It was overcast and cloudy yesterday and rain is expected until Monday with temperatures ranging between 14 and 18 degrees.

A cold front is set to hit the city on Saturday and meet a trough of low pressure. As a result, rain will turn heavier. Occasional downpours are forecast for Sunday and temperatures are expected to fall slightly.

Some downtown streets and some sections of elevated roads will be closed during the event.

From midnight on Saturday to 7:45am on Sunday, all vehicles will be banned from Nansuzhou Road, Beijing Road E., Dianchi Road, Nanjing Road E., Hankou Road and Jiujiang Road between Zhongshan Road E1 and Jiangxi Road M.

Vehicles are also barred from using Zhongshan Road E1. between Waibaidu Bridge and Xinkaihe Road from 5am to 7:45am on Sunday, while from 5am to 7am, no traffic will be allowed on Jiangxi Road M. between Fuzhou Road and Beijing Road E.

From 6:30am to 7:45am, the off-ramp of Yan’an Elevated Road at Jiangxi Road will be closed as will Yan’an Road E. between Zhongshan Road E1. and Jiangxi Road M.

From 7am to 8:30am, the off-ramp of Yan’an Elevated Road at Huashan Road will be closed, and likewise from 7:15 to 9am for the off-ramp of the North-South Elevated Road at Huaihai Road.

From 6:30 to 8:30am, all vehicles will be banned from Yandang Road between Huaihai Road M. and Fuxing Park.

From 8:30am to 1pm, the Yunjin Road exit of Longyao Road Tunnel will be closed.

From 7am to 1:30pm, other streets where the runners will pass will also be closed.

A total of 128 bus routes overlapping the course will be disrupted, including route 20, the oldest in Shanghai, which will be suspended until the marathon ends. Stops in the marathon area will be closed for the duration of the race.
