Shutterbugs flock to birding spots
IT is migration-watch time again at Dongtan wetland on Chongming Island and Paotaiwan Park in Baoshan District.
At Dongtan, hooded cranes, oriental white storks, black storks and white-tailed eagles can be seen, as more than 1 million migrant birds pass through every year.
The Yangtze River inter-tidal zone and wetland at Paotaiwan is another hot spot. It attracts around 100 species of migrant between November and March, with egrets, herring gull, Eurasian blackbird and light-vented bulbul among the most commonly seen.
Xinjiangwan Wetland Park in Yangpu District is home to more than 36 species, including coucal and shrike. It features forestry, thickets and wetland with a huge hide for birdwatchers, often crowded with photographers.
The Shanghai International Nature Conservation Festival begins on Saturday with events including forums and lectures, a walk along the Huangpu River, visits to local parks, wetland exploration, photo exhibitions and film screenings.
Ornithologists from around the world will deliver lectures during the festival.
A walking tour along the Huangpu will begin in the North Bund area on Saturday. Events will be held at zoos, botanical gardens and forest parks. People are invited to watch penguins taking a stroll at Shanghai Zoo, pick fruit at Chenshan Botanical Garden, and participate in a migrant bird protection campaign at Dongtan. A large number of photos will be displayed at Daning Music Plaza.
Wetland observation notes, plant photos, maps and articles by middle and primary school kids will be exhibited at the China Welfare Institute Children’s Palace on November 23 during a book launch.
Competitions and an environmental protection carnival will be held at local museums with nearly 30 nature films to be screened.
In its fourth year, the festival will run until November 23.
