The 5-star filth that just keeps on coming
A five-star hotel in Yangpu District has apologized after a guest found a packet of used cold medicine in the pocket of a hotel bathrobe.
It is the latest in a string of questionable hygiene practices uncovered in luxury hotels.
On Monday, the guest posted on Weibo that he had found a packet of used cold medicine in a bathrobe after taking a shower at the Hyatt Regency Shanghai Wujiaochang, suggesting the robe had not been cleaned after being used by a previous guest.
“I hope my ‘predecessor’ has recovered from their cold,” said the man, who identified himself as a dermatologist from Beijing.
The hotel said it has conducted an investigation and will take measures to ensure nothing similar happens again.
In response, Wu Dong, a blogger who last week posted online an 11-minute video exposing bad practice at 14 luxury hotels, said, “Many room attendants don’t change bathrobes, and it is advised not to use cups or glasses, bathrobes or bathtubs in these hotels.”
His video showed cleaners wiping cups and sinks with dirty towels and sponges.
Some used the same towel to wipe toilet seats, while others could be seen washing cups in shampoo.
Seven of the hotels were in Shanghai, where an investigation has begun.
The Sheraton Nanchang Hotel in Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province, has already been fined 2,000 yuan (US$288) after featuring in the video.
A room service attendant was shown cleaning cups with a rag already used to wipe toilets.
