Toddler killed in roadside tragedy

A toddler was killed yesterday morning when a wheel flew off a bus, police said.

The tragedy occurred at 10am when a No. 795 bus was pulling in to a bus stop on Yanggao Road S. in the Pudong New Area.

The left rear wheel suddenly flew off the bus and hit a child standing by the side of the road.

An investigation into the cause of the deadly incident is still under way.

Witness told TV news that a boy, aged about 3 years old, was waiting for the bus with his grandmother.

The flying wheel was seen to directly hit him on his head, causing him to immediately collapse to the ground.

The boy later died in hospital.

A nurse from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center said he had suffered severe internal injuries.

Bao Ronghua, deputy general manager of Pudong Bus Group’s Shangnan branch, told TV news that the bus driver had felt something wrong on the bus’ rear end and had slowed down before the incident occurred.

He said each wheel should be fixed with eight nuts, but only three were found at the scene.

Bao said the driver had strictly followed the rules and checked a standard 54 items before taking the vehicle out.

The wheel in question was just checked and maintained last Friday.

In January, a bus of the same type “spontaneously” burst into flames.

It has been reported that some bus operators had not followed the safety rules in maintaining older buses. The bus involved in yesterday’s deadly accident was said to be 10 years old.

Transport operators across the city have been ordered to check their buses.
