Water park closed after 37 people fall sick

AN indoor water park in Shanghai has suspended operations after 37 visitors fell sick.

Late Saturday, 19 adults and 18 children were rushed to the hospital after they complained of heavy coughing, vomiting and sore throat after visiting the Shangyin Water Park on Zhonghuaxin Road in Jing’an District.

All of them were reported to be in stable condition early yesterday and had already left the hospital.

But Jing’an authorities, including the health commission, environmental authority and emergency treatment bureau, have launched an investigation into the incident.

They have ruled out contamination by toxic and hazardous substances.

The water park has promised to cooperate with the investigation.

The park has also agreed to return the entry ticket fees to those who have bought advance tickets and offered medical compensation to the victims.

The park said the visitors may have stayed in the water park for too long. The stagnant air in confined spaces might have led to high levels of carbon dioxide.

According to Xinhua Hospital, doctors treated more than 20 patients who said they felt unwell after smelling unpleasant odor.

Medical tests showed they were not poisoned and were not at risk.

One of the visitors, surnamed Chu, told local media that she was sitting on a chair watching her son swim when he started to cough heavily and told her that he wanted to vomit.

She immediately pulled her son out of the pool. She said there was a strong odor that was similar to bleaching powder.
