WeChat app for book fair launched

Next month’s Shanghai Book Fair will have a WeChat app — Mobile Book Fair — to give details of the more than 1,000 events at the main venue and over 100 other sites.

Xu Jiong, director of the Shanghai Press and Publication Bureau, said when traditional publishing is facing the challenges brought by new technology, it also has to provide new forums for readers.

On-site mobile payment services are being improved this year with online ticketing still available.

The fair, from August 14 to 20, will be open from 9am to 9pm daily.

Some 500 new books will feature at launches, readings and signing events while Shanghai books will be promoted at nearly 50 parallel venues in other cities.

The seventh edition of “Cihai,” a large-scale Chinese dictionary and encyclopedia, will be released. First published in Shanghai in 1936, “Cihai” has now had six editions. After its third edition in 1979, a new verison is produced every 10 years.
