WorldSkills competition needs a modern mascot

A COMPETITION to create a mascot for the 46th WorldSkills Competition, which will be held in Shanghai in 2021, has now opened.

The WorldSkills Competition is an international event known as the “skills Olympics.”

Shanghai won the bid in October 2017, ahead of the 44th WorldSkills Competition held in Abu Dhabi.

It will be the first time the Chinese mainland has hosted the event.

People should send their designs for a mascot to the organizing committee by mail or e-mail before 6pm on April 30.

The mascot should demonstrate Chinese characteristics of skills and culture.

It should also be modern and international and show the spirit of Shanghai, which is being inclusive, excellence-oriented, open-minded, intelligent, generous and modest.

Designers should illustrate their work in both Chinese and English.

The mascot can be presented as a single image, or in several scenarios with different gestures and colors.

Designers must submit both black-and-white as well as colored versions drawn or printed on sheets of A4 paper.

As the mascot will be used in two- or three-dimensional media and digital platforms, designers have to submit drawings of front, back and side views, as well as 3D effect drawings.

All the drawings should be at least 3 megabytes.

Designers also have to keep their original drawings for verification.

The designer of the successful mascot will win 30,000 yuan (US$4,470). There will also be five outstanding design awards, with prizes of 6,000 yuan. Another 10 finalists will win souvenirs.

People interested can log onto the website of Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau (www.12333sh.gov.cn) or WoldSkills China (www.worldskillschina.cn), or scan the QR code for more information about the requirements and download related forms for participation.
