New mark for Ronaldo in Juve win

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to set yet another goalscoring landmark and help Juventus to a 3-1 home win over Udinese yesterday that sent it back to the top of the Serie A table.

In-form Ronaldo, who has five goals in his last four games, took his tally for the season to 11 in 19 appearances, becoming the only player in Europe’s top five leagues to hit double figures in all competitions in each of the last 15 seasons.

The Portuguese struck twice in the first half before Leonardo Bonucci headed in Juve’s third on the brink of halftime.

Ignacio Pussetto netted a consolation for the visitors late in the game.

Juventus suffered its first defeat of the season at Lazio last weekend to surrender the lead to Inter Milan, but the champion put pressure back on Antonio Conte’s side by moving one point clear at the top with victory at the Allianz Stadium.

Maurizio Sarri’s side has 39 points, but Inter can regain first place by beating Fiorentina away in the late game yesterday.

Relegation trouble

Udinese remains in relegation trouble after falling to 17th place on 15 points, hovering just two points above the drop zone.

Earlier, Hellas Verona battled back from three goals down with all three substitutes scoring in a 15-minute second-half spell to hold Torino 3-3.

Torino had taken a comfortable lead at the Stadio Bentegodi after Christian Ansaldi scored a double with Alex Berenguer also on target for the visitors.

But the hosts hit back with three goals after 69 minutes from players who all came off the bench.

Giampaolo Pazzini converted a penalty in the 69th after Gleison Bremer was deemed to have used his elbow to block the ball.

Pazzini was then involved in the second with Valerio Verre smashing in off a rebound. Mariusz Stepinski added a third pouncing on a defending error from Torino’s Ola Aina to finish off.

Torino is ninth with Verona two points behind in 11th, in the hosts’ final match before the winter break.

Torino next plays SPAL on Saturday.
