Japan shuttlers soar in Wuhan
Japan showed its muscle yesterday by winning two finals out of three against China at the Asian Championships.
Top seed Kento Momota defended his title by defeating Chinese second seed Shi Yuqi 12-21, 21-18, 21-8 in Wuhan, central Hubei Province.
Third-seeded Akane Yamaguchi of Japan beat her Chinese opponent He Bingjiao 21-19, 21-9. The victory brought Japan its first women’s singles title at the Asian Championships.
In the final of the women’s doubles, Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan notched up a hard-fought 19-21, 21-14, 21-19 victory over Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara of Japan.
Wang Yilu and Huang Dongping defeated their compatriots He Jiting and Du Yue 21-11, 13-21, 23-21 to win the mixed doubles crown.
Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo and Yuta Watanabe beat Marcus Gideon and Kevin Sukamuljo of Indonesia 21-18, 21-3 in the men’s doubles final.
