Star Lin suffers earliest exit at worlds

Five-time winner Lin Dan suffered a shock defeat to HS Prannoy in the second round of the world championships in Basel, Switzerland, yesterday.

The twice Olympic champion, went down to the 30th-ranked Indian 11-21, 21-13, 7-21.

It was Lin’s earliest exit in 12 appearances at the world championships. He lost twice previously in the third round — in 2003 when he played for the first time at age 19 and last year in Guangzhou.

“I didn’t have enough energy for today’s match, especially in the first game,” he said. “I played better in the second but in the third I just ran out of gas.”

Lin, who turns 36 in October, blamed organizers for “unfair” match schedule, which gave him just 15 hours to recover from his first-round match.

He completed the three-game victory over Nguyen Tien Minh of Vietnam at nearly 6pm on Monday and arrived at the venue early yesterday morning.

“Some players who played much earlier than me yesterday will play their second round match later today,” he said. “I just hope the organizers could make the schedule fairer.”

Lin said he has yet to decide on whether to compete in the 2021 world championships.
