Stunning Thais set up China clash

Ratchanok Intanon, a former world championship winner, stopped the winning streak of schoolgirl An Se-young in the women’s singles to give Thailand a stunning 3-1 victory over defending champion South Korea and a berth in the semifinals of the Sudirman Cup last night.

The 24-year-old Ratchanok beat the 17-year-old An 21-15, 21-17 in the women’s singles, bringing an end to An’s two-match winning streak at the tournament in Nanning, south China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

During the group stage, An had downed top-ranked Tai Tzu -ying of Chinese Taipei and 27th-ranked Cheung Ngan Yi of China’s Hong Kong to help an under-strength South Korea qualify for the quarterfinals. The defending champion was missing 10th-ranked Sung Ji-hyun in the women’s singles and 6th-ranked Son Wan-ho in the men’s singles due to injuries.

Ratchanok’s victory sealed the 3-1 win for Thailand, which will now play for a place in the final against favorite China after the hosts saw off Denmark by the same scoreline.

Thailand won the opening mixed doubles as 4th-ranked Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai beat 7th-ranked Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung 21-18, 21-18.

Thailand then enlarged its advantage in the men’s singles when Kantaphon Wangcharoen beat Heo Kwang-hee, the world junior champion, 21-17, 21-17.

South Korea scored one point through Kang Min-hyuk and Kim Won-ho in the men’s doubles, by beating 33rd-ranked Tinn Isriyanet and Kittinupong Kedren 19-21, 21-17, 21-14.

In the China-Denmark clash, mixed doubles world No. 1 Huang Yaqiong and Zheng Siwei rallied to beat 14th-ranked Danish combination Mathias Christiansen and Sara Thygesen 19-21, 21-11, 21-13 in 63 minutes.

Denmark erased the deficit by winning the men’s singles when third-ranked Viktor Axelsen eased past world No. 5 and Rio Olympic champion Chen Long 21-11, 21-18 in one hour.

In the men’s doubles, world No. 3 Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen edged 8th-ranked Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen 21-18, 21-16 in 55 minutes, helping China take a lead 2-1.

Then, Chen Yufei sealed the victory for China, which has won the Sudirman Cup 10 times, in the women’s singles as the third-ranked shuttler cruised past 22nd-ranked Mia Blichfeldt 21-16, 21-17.

Japan faces Malaysia and Chinese Taipei plays Indonesia in the other quarterfinals today.
