Mayweather unlikely to fight Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather has “zero interest” in coming out of retirement for a rematch with Manny Pacquiao after their money-spinning 2015 superfight, close confidante Leonard Ellerbe said on Wednesday.

Ellerbe, chief executive of Mayweather Promotions, told the boxingscene.com website that not even the prospect of another lucrative payday would tempt Mayweather back into the ring.

Mayweather is believed to have earned an estimated US$300 million from the points victory over Pacquiao, which remains the most lucrative fight in history and generated more than US$600 million revenue.

Pacquiao’s long-time trainer Freddie Roach said last week he would be keen for the Filipino icon to set up a rematch with Mayweather after a frustrating defeat in the first meeting.

However, while Mayweather will be at ringside for Pacquiao’s world title fight against Keith Thurman in Las Vegas on Sunday (China time), Ellerbe says there is no chance of a rematch.

“Floyd has no interest,” Ellerbe told boxingscene. “He has zero interest. He’s been doing this all his life. And after a while, you get burned out. He’s given the sport everything.”

Ellerbe said Mayweather was instead happy in his retirement. “He’s very content,” Ellerbe said. “He’s living his best life. I just talked to him earlier today. We went over some business stuff. He’s travelling, spending time with his kids, spending time with his family.”

Speaking to reporters last week, Roach said he was still bothered by Pacquiao’s loss to Mayweather, when the Filipino’s challenge was hampered by a shoulder problem.

“Hopefully we can get Mayweather to come to the table,” Roach said. “I would like us to have one more crack at him.”

Meanwhile, Canelo Alvarez has scrapped plans to fight in September after failing to line up a suitable opponent, the world middleweight champion announced on Wednesday.

Alvarez, the WBA, WBC and IBF champion, had been provisionally due to fight on September 14, maintaining a tradition of fighting on or around Mexico’s Independence Day holiday.

However the 28-year-old from Guadalajara, whose last fight in May was a unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs, revealed he will now fight later in the year. “As a Mexican, it’s a responsibility and an honor to represent my country in both May and September,” Alvarez said in a statement released by Golden Boy Promotions.

“Those are my dates. However, as a world champion in multiple weight classes, I also have the responsibility of delivering the most exciting and competitive fights possible. That’s why Golden Boy and my team have decided to postpone the date in order to do right by my fans by promoting the best fight possible and with the best opponent possible.”

Alvarez had been in talks about a possible title defense with light heavyweight Sergey Kovalev.

Alvarez’s camp is also reported to be lukewarm about the prospect of a third battle with former middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who he defeated last year in a 12-rounder in Las Vegas.
