Upgraded squads get set for Tour of Chongming

More than 100 cyclists representing 18 teams from 14 countries and regions will take part in the 2019 Tour of Chongming Island from May 9 to 11.
The annual tour has become a signature international sports event. And it also serves as the 10th leg of the 2019 UCI Women’s World Tour.
According to Chinese Cycling Association Vice President He Qiang, this year’s race will see an upgraded squad.
Star teams confirmed include world’s second-ranked Mitchelton Scott from Australia, world’s 7th-ranked WNT Rotor Pro Cycling Team from Germany, as well as last year’s champion Team Tibco Silicon Valley Bank from the United States.
China’s national team and Hong Kong will also take part.
The three-day race will cover a distance of 347.7 kilometers, including 17 out of 18 of the island’s counties and towns.
Wang Jing, vice director of Chongming District, said a five-day cycling-themed carnival will be held from May 8 to 12.
Chongming also plans to stage five more cycling competitions this year for youth.
Chongming Island first organized the men’s national cycling competition in 2003.
Four years later, it became the women’s competition and was upgraded to the International Cycling Union series.
“Making use of the pleasant ecological environment of the island, we have built cycling into a signature sports event for Chongming,” said Wang.
“In our future plan, an indoor cycling venue will be built inside the newly opened Chongming Sports Training Center, which will also become the Asian Cycling Union’s office in China.”
He said the new indoor venue will serve as a training base for Shanghai and China national team cyclists. “We plan to organize training courses at Chongming Sports Training Center to cultivate our own cycling team operators and technicians to help the sport grow.”
