Japan’s Honda grabs early lead in windy Zhuhai
Nao Honda emerged as the first-round leader at the Golf Liquor Zhuhai Golden Gulf Challenge yesterday after the Japanese overcame wet and windy conditions to shoot a 6-under-par 66 for a one-stroke lead in south China’s Guangdong Province.
China’s Du Mohan (67) was one shot back at the CLPGA Tour event being played at Zhuhai Golden Gulf Golf Club. Defending champion Yupaporn Kawinpakorn was equal third following a 69 in a group that included fellow Thais Chatprapa Siriprakob and Aunchisa Utama and China’s Zhang Yunjie. The 23-year-old Honda put together a bogey-free round featuring six birdies through the first 13 holes to set the early pace in her quest for her maiden win as a pro. Cai Danlin was the top amateur at the third-year tournament that was created in cooperation with the Guangdong Golf Association. The Hainan teenager opened with a round of even-par 72.
