Pachyderm on parole
Riff Raff, the South African elephant who faced a death sentence for knocking down fences and trampling farmland has secured another reprieve after activists intervened.
Landowners near Kruger National Park had sought a court ruling to have the 6-ton bull elephant shot after he damaged their property.
Activists, who moved him away from the area in 2017 only to find he had wandered back, said it was natural for animals to roam.
The group said killing him would be a “quick fix” to a biological and environmental issue.
Many communities across Africa complain about damage to their land by the world’s largest land mammals.
