A casual taste of the French countryside

THE newly opened Chez Jojo is a refreshingly pleasant addition to the popular food and beverage strip at the corner of Fumin and Changle roads. And, the city’s third Chez Jojo outlet is sure to be another go-to gathering spot, serving classic French comfort food in a relaxed style.

“I’d been eying this location for a while. When the opportunity came, I took it immediately,” said Maggie Shen, who opened her first French bistro Des Lys back in 2004. As an experienced restaurateur, Shen is keen on offering a French experience that is both casual and unpretentious.

The original Chez Jojo, on Yueyang Road, closed its door a few months ago due to a leasing issue. But this new location has continued the spirit of its precursor by staying true to the original concept inspired by a typical guinguette — a popular and humble eatery mostly found in the French countryside, particularly in the Loire Valley.

The plant-filled space, beautiful wooden tables and the spacious terrace overlooking the trees, create a feeling that you’ve just wandered onto a riverside guinguette.

The menu is authentically French and flavorsome and includes a seasonal cheese indulgence — raclette and fondue savoyarde, a classic of ski resort restaurants. Visitors can expect to joyfully scrape gooey, melted cheese onto their plate and, every Wednesday, there is an all-you-can-eat promotion for either of the choices priced at 248 yuan per person. Nothing is more decadent and fun than sharing raclette or cheese fondue among friends in the harsh winter months.

Under the watchful eye of the owner Shen and manager Polo, the kitchen turns out plate after plate of housemade foie gras terrine, grilled bone marrow and other French classics with high-quality ingredients. The charcoal-grilled steaks, loved by many since Chez Jojo’s first venue, are still the stars here.

There are two options for Tomahawk: Australian Angus M3, 60 days aged (1100 grams), costs 888 yuan (US$135) for a bigger group and the 180-day grain-fed bone-in Australian Angus M2, rib eye (500 grams) at 298 yuan, perfect for two to share. Beef Rossini is another well-executed steak dish, served with a pan-seared slice of foie gras and black pepper sauce.

There is a lot to love about the wine list too: it boasts an expansive selection of wines from both old and new worlds and most bottles are priced between 200 and 400 yuan. With 14 buy-glass options, visitors can easily pair each course with the right wine to maximize the tasting experience.
