A dog-friendly spot of old-school Yugo vittles

YUGOSLAVIAN “pljeskavica” (burger patty) that is widely beloved in Balkan nations made a splash earlier this year on an unassuming Shanghai street corner.

The former Yugoslavian crowds and curious faces queued up for this large burger during weekend nights that surprised even the people behind this window-shop concept. With such positive feedback on what they offered, the partners went on to open a more permanent space at the corner of Shaanxi Road N. and Kangding Road.

They took over the lease for the closed Lucky Diner space, and changed it to a spot reminiscent of an old-style Yugoslavian restaurant in the 1970s and 80s. Posters on the wall are from that period, providing vintage ambience.

Starting from a hole-in-the-wall spot to a current sit-down restaurant serving beloved recipes for lunch, dinner and late night eats, Yugo Grill’s success formula is beyond its authentic food from the region.

It’s a homey place with friendly staff where you feel immediately at ease. It’s also a dog-friendly spot where you can bring your canine companion or just enjoy the simple pleasure of dog-watching while you dine.

The food menu has been expanded to include salad bowls and meat platters.

“Every Sunday, we offer cooked meals that our grandparents used to cook for us for Sunday family lunch,” said Vladimir Milosevic, one of the partners.

The mixed platter is a great choice — basically a mix of almost all the best items they have. It comes with ten cevapi (traditional Balkan sausage-shaped minced meat made from beef and pork), two spicy sausages, two pieces of juicy boneless chicken thighs, one meat patty and one valter sausage along with salads and toppings on the side. It’s great for sharing and a carnivore’s delight.

Yugo Grill is the only restaurant in China that serves rakija, the national drink of the Balkans distilled from fruits — a fruity brandy that can be made of basically any kind of fruit.

“It’s basically our Yugoslavian baijiu,” said Milosevic.

“Also, we have Yugo lager beer that we craft ourselves. It’s a proper Yugoslavian beer without any strange taste that goes best with our food.”

Yugo Grill organizes different events, from DJ nights, quizzes and theme nights to special dish days and live music performances.

“We now have a secondhand camera equipment exchange. We do what we think is cool, and feel the vibe from our guests and do it as we want,” Milosevic said.
