Anfu Rd has funky and wholesome addition

FUNK & Kale, a new, welcoming cafe on Anfu Road, started with some simple ideas — wholesome, fresh and healthy. Furthermore, reasonable prices.

Founder John Christensen and managing partner Jackie Yun of Wagas Shanghai Ltd, has brought their long-term knowledge of the food and beverage sector and created a refined whole-day menu that include fresh salads, poke bowls, tacos, pastas and curries. It’s a mixed culture menu that accommodates different kinds of needs.

“Good food, good vibes with a low-carb menu is what we are offering here,” Yun said.

She has a particular liking for the location, as Anfu Road is where they launched the group’s first Baker & Spice store in 2010.

“There were no traffic jams back then,” she said. “Now, visitors from all over the globe come to Anfu Road to dine, walk the tree-lined streets, take selfies and enjoy an ice cream.

“And it’s the place where Shanghai locals and expats enjoy hanging out. Food traffic is high which is what we always look for when choosing locations. It just so happened that this great space came up and we felt it was perfect for a fresh, young concept and menu to match the vibe.”

The casual atmosphere is comforting and friendly and has drawn a devoted following in the chic neighborhood since its recent opening.

Upstairs is Y+ yoga studio, so the cafe surely boasts all the low-carb, energy-boost plates every yogi expects.

The menu provides items both playful and tasty. For example, the jianbing is one of the signature dishes. “Customers like wraps but we wanted to do something different, healthier,” Yun said.

“Also, we are proud to be a local Shanghainese brand. So instead of a regular wrap, ours is made from fresh beetroot and eggs and we’ve called it a jianbing. We wanted to play with words.”

The fillings include grilled salmon, smashed avocado, black beans, greens and dukkah, as well as a spicy version Sichuan chicken and others.

I also enjoyed their tacos, non conventional of course. The usual Mexican tortilla is replaced by the local scallion oil pancake and fillings such as pan-seared asparagus, guacamole or green granny coleslaw make a refreshing tasty summer snack. Yun also takes pride in the quality coffee they serve.

“We (Wagas) opened our own coffee roastery earlier this year and it supplies freshly roasted specialty coffee to all our brands,” Yun said.

“We have a three-week turn-around from roaster to store ensuring absolute freshness. “Business sustainability in this super competitive market is key. Wagas pioneered the healthy lifestyle cafe trend and our little sister Funk & Kale is just taking things to a new level,” she added.
