Enjoy Western cuisine on a panoramic rooftop

THE Roof 325 Restaurant & Bar, sitting on the top floor of the Shanghai History Museum, has one of the best views in Puxi.

The restaurant, which opened 14 years ago, was one of the earliest pioneers of Western cuisine in Shanghai. The venue, formerly the Shanghai Race Club building and city art museum, underwent an 18-month renovation and reopened at the beginning of 2018. As part of the renovation it removed the famous outdoor glass dining room to present an open view of the park and city.

Roof 325 now specializes in contemporary Western cuisine. Executive chef Matthew Ona sources fresh ingredients and combines them with flavors from around the world as he puts a spin on classic American dishes.

For example, the salmon tartar starter (98 yuan), composed of fresh fish and crushed avocado, is influenced by Japanese cuisine. It is seasoned with a tangy ginger miso sauce and served with spiced crunch and oven dried tomato for contrast of texture and flavor.

A very popular starter recommended by Ona is the chop chop salad (78 yuan), a vibrant plate of hearty vegetables, beans, nuts and cheese. The portion size is very generous and it’s great sharing plate.

The black cod filet, poached in X.O. infused broth and served with sauteed spinach, mushrooms, preserved lemon and chives (328 yuan), is an elegant main course.

For bolder flavors, try the slow braised lam shank with handmade pappardelle pasta (238 yuan) or pan seared Berkshire pork chop with aged cheddar mozzarella Cromesquis (298 yuan).

And as for the dessert, the spiced warm apple crumble (68 yuan) served with vanilla bean Grand Marnier pastry sauce, whipped mascarpone and sugar apple is perfect for the season and it’s more on the sweeter side.

Their Valrhona chocolate cake composed of five different presentations of chocolate is also worth a try.

Roof 325’s brunch menu is worth discovering as well. For 178 yuan per person, you can select any three dishes from the menu, from the classic egg and salmon Florentine to grilled meat, salads and sliders.

The brunch set also comes with a drink, options include homemade chocolate cashew date milk, almond and cashew horchata and big berry yogurt smoothie, as well as beer, soda, juices and house wines.

Brunch is available from 11:30am to 3:30pm on weekends. On weekdays, the lunch set menu is 138 yuan for one starter and one main course.
