Get your claws into Barbarossa’s Ministry of Crab

THE Barbarossa Restaurant, Bar & Lounge inside People’s Park has reopened with a new partner, Ministry of Crab, one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants from Colombo. The Shanghai branch is the brand’s first store outside Sri Lanka.

Barbarossa has been known for the exotic space inspired by Moroccan architecture. The venue has been recently renovated to adopt a modern Moroccan style. The first floor now houses the Ministry of Crab while the second and third floors are lounges.

The pond surrounds the bright and distinctively decorated dining area, and on sunny days it’s one of the most photogenic venues in Shanghai.

Founded by acclaimed chef Dharshan Munidasa, Ministry of Crab is one of the must-visit culinary destinations in Sri Lanka. It’s famous for the large variety of crab dishes that are cooked with traditional Sri Lankan spices.

Ministry of Crab has a simple menu highlighting lagoon crab and prawn entries. The crabs and prawns, delivered fresh and live straight from Sri Lanka, are priced according to the weight.

A crab weighing 500 to 600 grams is priced 289 yuan, crabs up to 700 grams are 378 yuan, while the largest 2-kilogram “crabzilla” is 1,288 yuan. They don’t source crabs below 500 grams for sustainable development.

Ministry of Crab’s original garlic chili crab is a combination of Mediterranean and Japanese food philosophies, blending olive oil, garlic, Sri Lankan chili flakes and Japanese soy sauce.

The garlic brings a prominent richness to crab, but it doesn’t overpower the natural sweetness of the meat. The giant claws are definitely the best part, and the crabs are served with the shell already crushed, so it’s easy to dig into all the deliciousness.

The crabs are cooked in olive oil without frying, and dipping cubed bread in the sauce is the perfect staple for the meal of crabs.

The pepper crab is a much heavier creation made with a large quantity of black pepper, while the sauce is quite pungent. Munidasa has also created a special flavor for their first restaurant in China, the Sichuan peppercorn.

You can also choose king prawns as the main dish, which are cooked in the same way as the crabs. Depending on size, the price of the prawns range from 168 to 368 yuan.
