Oysters and grilled delights without any pretension

YAKU is a popular neighborhood yakiniku restaurant where customers share cooked meats over a flaming charcoal grill while sipping on Japanese sake or a cold beer.

The establishment opened earlier this year on Yude Road in Xuhui District and joined a variety of newly opened eateries and cafes along that stretch of the road accommodating the nearby hungry communities.

Unlike those more pretentious, subdued yakiniku restaurants in town, Yaku gives off a happy, relaxed vibe. The eatery is not designed for an intimate meal, it’s designed more for those wanting to enjoy a satisfying barbecue feast.

Before trying out the different variety of grilled meats, start with oysters and fresh raw seafood. There are several oyster choices, including New Zealand moana blue pearl and French Gillardeau. Furthermore, the New Zealand scampi, Arctic shrimp and Japanese uni are all good quality and worth a nibble.

The restaurant offers a variety of sauces and spices that bring out, and add, more flavor to the various meats on offer. Yaku caters to different tastes, but mostly to its local customers who love to add in flavor and spice. However I found the best companion for grilled meats was pure sea salt and sesame oil.

The place is a heaven for carnivores, and the carefully chosen selection of meats for grilling all proved to be satisfying. I couldn’t resist the premium cut beef tongue and the special boneless beef short rib. The fine texture of the meats definitely rivals some of the finest establishments in town.

As a counterbalance to our guilty meat indulgences, my party also crunched on refreshing arugula salad as well as the edamame.

Yaku is keen on offering a few local-style appetizers such as duck tongue and boneless chicken feet for the clientele.

The drink menu had a large selection of sake available, including the famous Dassai45 and Dassai39 junmai daiginjo. Dassai45 junmai daiginjo is priced at 78 yuan per glass (120ml).
