Retro American diner with Japanese twist

FOLLOWING on from the success of neighborhood highball bar Lucky Mart, a new spot for all-day dining with highballs opened its doors in Jing’an District.

Lucky Diner is managed by the same team behind Lucky Mart on Fumin Road, who are keen to maintain their casual yet affordable and cheerful concept. They took over a space at the corner of Kangding Road and Shaanxi Road N., and turned it to a cool, simply furnished space with a retro American diner feel.

Inspired by Japan’s fascination with old school Americana, the Lucky team play on the comfort afforded by future-retro references in the space — a playful balance between the manufactured look of early 20th century American design and the handicraft aesthetic of traditional Japan.

Classic diner details like striped serviceware and vintage Coca-Cola touches highlight the space as well.

A diner is a staple of American culture, a place to find an inexpensive meal, meet with friends or simply pause for a brief respite over a cup of coffee. Diners are usually known for a handful of classic, homey dishes, like fries, sandwiches and buffalo wings, but here the Lucky team creates a menu offering classic American diner food with a Japanese twist, accompanied by their house highballs.

The essential element of diner fare is the all day (plus night) breakfast, so Lucky Diner serves up brunch items like wagyu steak and eggs, an egg salad sando, fluffy Japanese pancakes and Hokkaido milk French toast with matcha cream.

Buttermilk cornbread is a definite pick at Lucky Diner — crunchy buttery edges with a soft, fluffy texture. It comes with truffle honey and miso butter sauces that surprisingly elevate the taste of the cornbread. I couldn’t help but take bite after bite.

Other delicious snacks to share include buffalo wing tips, Tokyo disco fries with curry gravy and, for those preferring dinner comfort plates, try the pork rib robatayaki, Kirin “beer can” whole roast chicken, or beef and sea urchin donburi. I loved the creative side of Lucky Diner when integrating Japanese elements into American diner dishes. Overall, it accommodates both Asian and Western tastes.

From the bar, they have coffees, coke floats made with matcha ice cream, day-to-night cocktails like a Mimo-San made with sparkling sake and a fizzy yuzu-jasmine soda or a Bloody Lucky made with shochu, wasabi and soy — all in addition to their signature highball.

And following Lucky Mart’s reputation as a late-night spot, Lucky Diner opens late as well, until 2am on weekend nights.
