Small kitchen but big variety of Indonesian delights

EXOTIC Indonesian cuisine courtesy of Pawon Saji recently set up shop in The Green House, a new food hub next to Ole on the basement of Jing’an Kerry Center.

The food hub itself pleases the eyes with plants decorating the communal seating areas.

The space is home to a few other newcomers as well, including Pici, Ethai Cafe and The Bunisher.

Pawon Saji is housed in a relatively small spot inside the food hub, and is the sister brand of The Pawon, an Indonesian restaurant inside the Soho Gubei office building in Changning District.

Edwin Senjaya, the Jakarta native behind The Pawon, said opening Pawon Saji is a great opportunity to bring his home country’s exciting flavors to a wider audience.

The menu is designed to fit the location, which is frequented by office workers during lunch time. There’s a variety of set lunch options, including turmeric chicken rice, beef rendang and two vegetarian dishes.

But Pawon Saji is more than just an ideal spot for a comforting lunch. A relaxed evening dinner is a great time to try out the range of exotic dishes.

It’s surprising to see a wide variety of dishes available in such a small kitchen, covering the extensive amount of regional flavors drawn from the Indonesian archipelago. Beef rendang — spicy braised beef in coconut milk with aromatic spices — is a must try. The dish was voted the most delicious food by CNN viewers in 2017 and 2018. Grilled beef ribs with sweet and spicy soya sauce is very tender and delicious.

Sambal sauce calamari is an authentic plate of Indonesian flavors that integrates the sambal (traditional Indonesian chili paste made with shrimp paste, shallots, chili and bird eye chili) with a mixture of tamarind sauce, palm sugar, lemongrass and lime leaves to balance the seafood flavor and provide a touch of acidity.

It is a spicy dish and can be enjoyed with rice. Speaking of rice, the fragrant yellow turmeric rice is worth trying. It originated in the era of the Javanese Hindu kingdom, and the tradition of making turmeric rice continues to this day. Turmeric is a significant part of Asian cooking and accounts for the rice’s golden yellow color. The rice comes with fried onions, peanuts, shredded omelet and vegetable curry.
