Vibe of a downtown New York joint at Up Shanghai

Up Shanghai is a fun hip place with an eclectic mix of DJs and music attracting crowds of young folks in the know. But nightlife is not the only thing happening, food fun also matches the fun vibe, making it an ideal place for a young crowd to start or end an evening.

The indoor area is spacious with a long bar and high chairs for decent cocktails. There are lounge sofas and chairs for chilling-out and a dance floor to boogie the night away. The music follows a New York City trend with a mix of hip hop and electronics, while Peruvian chef Carlos Sotomayor creates the bar bites.

“It’s a New York-style night spot so the bar bites are created with influences from everywhere as New York is a city with multiple cultural influences. Besides, they all go along with the cocktails,” he said.

The menu is all about comfort food, such as the soy-ginger glazed wings, chicken karaage, waffle fries with brisket gravy and truffle moliterno and Iberico pork fried dumpling.

The chef loves to use his preferred saucing to add a different touch to the rather basic bar food. For example, laoganma (a brand of chili sauces made in China) is often used in his cooking.

Up Shanghai also opens for Sunday brunch and provides a different menu. It still sticks to the New York concept with offerings like wings and waffles, burrito, eggs Benedict, burger and fried rice.

The Szechuan B-Fast omelette also shows the chef’s love of Sichuan chili sauce and generously spreads the laoganma sauce on the omelet for spice lovers.

Up Shanghai is active with different events and promotions. Supper Thursdays, from 6pm to midnight, features two set menus of carb-loaded comfort food (priced at 225 yuan and 350 yuan) and bocktails (bottled cocktails priced at 200 yuan for 500ml). Thursday is also ladies’ night so girls get free-flow selected cocktails from 9pm to midnight for free. Cocktails rotate every week from daiquiris to sidecars.

Every Tuesday their signature Broadway burger is half price till 10pm and every Wednesday hot dogs are half price as well.
