More meds prescribed online

Mrs Zhang, a Shanghai resident in her mid 30s, took less than three minutes to receive her high blood pressure prescription from Shanghai Xuhui Hospital’s online platform.

After a look at her medical records, Dr Xu Rong prescribed her medication through the hospital’s digital diagnosis and prescription platform.

“I was running out of prescription medicine and digital service offered great convenience to help me avoid long lines at outpatient clinics,” Zhang said.

The medication is dispatched from the hospital’s pharmacy and delivered to her home.

Shanghai Xuhui Hospital is among seven hospitals, including Huashan, Zhongshan, and Shanghai Skin Disease Hospitals, that have received an Internet hospital license from health authorities to make prescribing medication online easier.

Online diagnoses have become an important supplement for patients with mild symptoms or those desiring fewer hospital visits.

In two weeks, the seven hospitals have offered more than 7800 diagnoses and 1450 prescriptions.

The city has also set up a one-stop fever consultation platform made up of more than 90 physicians from 15 local hospitals working in shifts.

As of Sunday, the platform has attracted 14,400 telephone calls and 144,900 visits to the “novel coronavirus workshop” WeChat mini program and served more than 2400 patients.

Other online diagnosis platforms offered by city-level hospitals received 1.88 million visits and 111,500 inquiries for non-fever diseases.

Patients can pay for registration and medical fees through medical insurance linked to the Internet hospitals’ online diagnosis platform.

Executive President Zhu Fu of Xuhui Hospital said staff is working to enhance technology capacity as more online visitors are turning to the platform. “We’re also optimizing its online procedure to cut waiting time for patients.”

Only prescription medicines require payment.
