ABC broadcasting legend Norman May remembered at SCG

Norman May called cricket and rugby before his retirement.

Legendary ABC sports broadcaster Norman May has been remembered at a memorial service at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

May, affectionately known as "Nugget", died earlier this month at the age of 88.

From humble beginnings to one of Australia's greatest sports commentators — look back on the sports broadcasting journey of Norman May, whose career spanned almost 50 years.

Today, some of Australia's leading sporting administrators and Olympic greats were on hand to pay tribute.

Australian swimming star Dawn Fraser said his death had been a "great loss to our community".

"He had a wonderful memory … I will never have a friend like him. So rest in peace mate," she said.

Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) president John Coates said May "did so much to promote the Olympic Games, [so] it is only fitting that we honour him today".

Former cricketer Alan Davidson reflected fondly upon his relationship with May.

"Not once did Norman ever take my opinion and quote it. Norman was the opposite. The opinion of players was a safe secret with him," he said.

Former ABC colleagues David Morrow and Alan Marks also farewelled the great.

"He was a genius with facts a genius with numbers. One of the things he'd always do was say: 'Seven minutes from here to the pub, so we need to break the PB this morning'," Morrow said.

"What he didn't let on was the amount of research he did. It was retained to the extent so that he could recall it at will, at anything," Marks added.

May will be remembered for his call of the men's freestyle medley relay at the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

"Fifteen metres from the gold medal for Australia … 10 metres now, Brooks in front. Five metres now, four, three, two, one ... Gold! Gold to Australia! Gold!" he had called.

May's ashes will be scattered off Freshwater Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
