Bruce Highway becomes a car park

Heavy congestion has brought traffic to a standstill along a 15-kilometre section of the Bruce Highway, north of Brisbane.

Amelia Oberhardt from the Australian Traffic Network said it was unusual to see such heavy traffic the day after Boxing Day and her best advice to anyone thinking of leaving Brisbane today was "stay at home".

She said the traffic jams at one point stretched for 20 kilometres but that the situation had eased.

"By eased I mean there's still about 15 kilometres of delays — they start now around North Lakes and they go all the way up to the Glasshouse Mountains," she said.

"It [traffic] has certainly started to build also for that southbound run as you push down through the Glasshouse Mountains.

"So where they meet around Beerburrum is pretty much a loggerhead at the moment in both ways.

"It has started to ease for the run on the Gateway, which was originally choked up back to Deagon. We're still seeing some fairly hefty queues for the M1 southbound as well."

The delays prompted a raft of complaints and warnings on social media.

Ms Oberhardt said traffic on the Bruce Highway was also heavy yesterday.

"I'm not sure if it's because Christmas Day landed on a Sunday that maybe a lot of people went away later than usual," she said.

"For it to be this busy for as long as it has today is somewhat unusual."

A car accident added to problems yesterday, but there were no crashes slowing progress today.

"Just a really high volume of traffic. Woodford Folk Festival has also started today so that may be adding to the woes," Ms Oberhardt said.
