Workers at fast food outlets in Canberra were underpaid by more than $22,000, an investigation by the Fair Work Ombudsman has found.

The investigation was carried out "over a period of years" as part of a national campaign that returned $582,410 to nearly 1,000 employees across the country.

The ACT's worst offender was an outlet in Belconnen where 10 employees were underpaid a total of $8,700.

In addition, four workers in Ngunnawal were found to have been short-changed $8,350.

The investigation also found some restaurants were underpaying their staff, with a restaurant in Yarralumla forced to back-pay $5,200 to 22 employees.

Overall the Fair Work Ombudsman retrieved unpaid wages for 27 fast food employees in Canberra.

In most instances, employees were being paid between $4-8 less an hour than the award rate and were not being paid the correct weekend penalty rates.

Acting Fair Work Ombudsman Michael Campbell said businesses needed to take responsibility for ensuring they were paying their staff correctly.

"When we find errors, our preference is to educate employers about their obligations and assist them to put processes in place to ensure the mistakes are not repeated," Mr Campbell said.
