Clive Palmer company mum on worker entitlements: union

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) says it is being ignored by management at Clive Palmer's Townsville nickel refinery on the issue of entitlements for workers.

The union will today address hundreds of employees at the Yabulu refinery, in north Queensland, about their entitlements.

Mr Palmer took control of the refinery from administrators by setting up a new company earlier this week.

Queensland Nickel Sales is a joint venture between two of Mr Palmer's other businesses and will retake management of Yabulu.

Mr Palmer's nephew, Clive Mensink, was made the sole director of the new company.

AMWU spokesman Rohan Webb said the company had not been forthcoming with information.

"We've written to the company on numerous occasions trying to seek assurances of behalf of our members and to date we've had no formal correspondence," he said.

"We tend to find out what's happening in the media, and that's atrocious."

Mr Webb said employees could not keep up.

"They just want that surety, but things move - just when we think we've got a take on the situation, we're it might be landing, all of a sudden another major development comes out of left field, which makes us all rethink," he said.

"Again, those workers, all they want to know is that they've got a job, they've got a secure job, and their entitlements are safe."

The ABC contacted Mr Palmer for comment but he was unavailable this morning.

Meanwhile, the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection said the new company overseeing the refinery — Queensland Nickel Sales — had applied for the authority to operate it and the application was being assessed.
