Cyclists and pedestrians to be helped across South Road

Traffic management staff will be stationed at the South Road tram overpass today to help cyclists and pedestrians find safe crossing points.

South Road, a main arterial route in Adelaide, re-opened to traffic yesterday when temporary work shored it up after structural damage was found last week.

A 1.6-kilometre section of the road between Anzac Highway and Cross Road was closed on Wednesday.

It is likely the path for cyclists and pedestrians on the overpass will be closed for months.

Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan said authorities were planning for the long term which would see more road closures on South Road in the future.

"We don't want cyclists or let alone pedestrians taking unnecessary risks so we'll make sure we've got extra staff in place to prevent them from doing that," Mr Mullighan said.

"We've got new signage on the fence in the middle of South Road directing cyclists just about 50 or 60 metres south of where this bridge is.

"They've then got the opportunity to cross one part of South Road, there's a median with significant width where they can pause in there and then cross in a second stage."
