Deal for direct flights between Adelaide and China to be signed this week

The South Australian Government has said it has reached an in-principle deal with a Chinese airline for the first direct flights between Adelaide and Chinese mainland.

China Southern Airlines is expected to begin operating the flights to Guangzhou as early as December.

China Southern would be the second airline to begin direct international flights out of Adelaide this year, after Qatar Airways began direct flights to Doha, Qatar, in May.

The final agreement is expected to be signed in Guangzhou later this week.

China Southern is the world's sixth-largest airline, operating more than 500 domestic and international aircraft.

Premier Jay Weatherill said it would create jobs that "extend well beyond Adelaide airport, helping our tourism and hospitality sectors to take advantage of this growing market".
