Kiwis want Canberra's IT experts in wake of Singapore Airlines deal

The introduction of flights between Canberra and New Zealand from later this year has prompted a call for local IT experts to cast their eyes across the Tasman.

Last week it was announced Singapore Airlines would begin a four day a week service directly linking Singapore, Canberra and Wellington from September.

Chris Whelan, head of Wellington's Regional Economic Development Agency, said they were looking to attract IT talent to across the ditch.

"I think that the New Zealand and certainly the Wellington tech sector is growing very fast," he said.

"It's a key area for us to focus on, and if there's people looking to relocate to start up businesses, to expand businesses, we obviously would be keen for them to come do it from Wellington."

Mr Whelan said the agency would ramp up its campaign to attract more people from Canberra and its surrounding regions.

"Coming from the Singapore, Wellington, Canberra flights we will be looking to expand those initiatives," he said.

"The ability to operate from Wellington nationally and regionally, those factors are very compelling for people who want to get going in the tech start-up space.

"If there are people in the south-east part of Australia that are in the tech field I would love to talk to them."

According to job search company Seek, the average advertised salary in Wellington for 2015 was the highest in the country at NZD$80,345 ($73,400).

Auckland was in second spot on NZD$75,856 ($69,400).
