A man has died in a rock fall at Papua New Guinea's largest mine, which only recently reopened after drought forced it to shut down last year.
Ok Tedi Mining Limited said the man was working in a sump at the bottom of the gold and copper mine pit when rocks and mud from its western wall fell in.
The mine's management was unable to retrieve the man's body before dark, and resumed recovery efforts this morning.
Operations at the open pit mine in the North Fly District of Western Province only started again in early March.
Ok Tedi slashed its workforce and halted production in July due to weak copper prices and dry weather connected to Papua New Guinea's El Nino-related drought.
The mine said it had suspended work again as a mark of respect.
It said PNG authorities had been notified of the man's death.
