Police gain access to live feeds from 7,000 QR security cameras

Queensland police have been given extensive access to more security cameras across the state, after striking a deal with Queensland Rail.

Police officers will now be able to live stream security footage from about 7,000 cameras at dozens of railway stations across the state.

From today, the QR footage is accessible to officers at the police communications centre in Brisbane.

Previously, police had to request vision of a specific incident from Queensland Rail's (QR) security team.

They will now be able to coordinate their response to an incident as it is happening.

In 2014, new technology was released allowing officers on the beat to live stream vision from about 70 City Safe cameras around Brisbane's CBD and Fortitude Valley straight to their handheld iPads.

Police Minister Bill Byrne said the new deal with QR would further enhance safety and security around train networks.

"It makes sense for police to have instant access to the eyes and ears provided by Queensland Rail's cameras and will ensure they are able to better respond to incidents," he said.

"This is a powerful new tool targeting antisocial behaviour, allowing police to monitor and react to incidents from crime through to crowd control and other issues surrounding big events like Riverfire or New Year's Eve."
