A new $250 million Sydney Fish Market is set to be built next door to the existing one at Blackwattle Bay.
After what the State Government describes as a "long saga", a deal has been reached with the fish market for the new development.
"Everyone agrees that it's in everyone's interests that the former site has well and truly outgrown its premises," NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes said.
"Sydney deserves a better Fish Market."
The new waterfront site backs onto Wentworth Park and will replace a concrete batching plant.
The existing site will be sold off to help finance the new one.
"The old site will be made available for a mixed use development and yes that's likely to include apartments," Mr Stokes said.
The new fish market is expected to be twice the size of the current one but there is no design yet.
"This is why we are today announcing a request for proposals for design and engineering firms to help us design something truly iconic," Mr Stokes said.
When it is finished, the fish market will become a key part of the Bays Precinct development, which will link the foreshore from Balmain to Woolloomooloo with a public walkway.
The current fish market will remain operating until the new one is completed.
It is expected to open in 2020.
Further details about the new development will be announced by the Government later today.
