China to boost strategic emerging industries amid slowdown
CHINA passed a guideline today to encourage the development of seven emerging strategic industries - the latest move to combat an economic slowdown.
"It is crucial to expand key emerging industries," the State Council, or China's Cabinet, said in a statement. "Their growth is of great importance for a stable economy, especially when China has seen mounting pressure of an economic slowdown."
The guideline provided the major tasks for the seven industries during the Five-Year Plan (2011-2015) period.
The seven strategic industries are: energy conservation and environmental protection, new-generation information technology, biotechnology, high-end equipment manufacturing, new energy, new materials and green vehicles.
For example, the ownership of core technologies in pollution prevention, safe disposal of pollutants, and recycling of resources is considered a broad blueprint for the development of the country's energy conservation and environmental protection industry. It should also promote clean production and low-carbon technologies to build the industry into a pillar for the economy.
For information technology, it should speed up the construction of next generation information networks, make progress in the research of ultra high-speed fiber and wireless communications technology, as well as advanced semiconductors to enhance the industry's global competitiveness.
For green vehicles, the guideline urges car manufacturers to speed up research in high-performance power batteries, motors and other key components to facilitate the formation of a scientific industry system.
