Many workers unhappy with pay 工资不满撤

Nearly a third of employees in Shanghai are unsatisfied with their salary, a citywide survey showed yesterday.

Only 19.1 percent of Shanghai's working population said they are satisfied with their current pay level, the Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions said in a research report yesterday. The rest of the survey, nearly half of respondents, were neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.

The research, conducted last year, covered about 4,000 employees from various industries. The average annual pay was 46,757 yuan (US$7,363) last year, up 9.3 percent from a year ago and 58 percent higher than 2006.

The report also said the widening income gap among industry sectors is becoming a major challenge in Shanghai.

The report did not provide specific figures for the gap, but financial and legal professionals are deemed to enjoy relatively higher incomes.

Shanghai had 10.64 million employees by the end of 2009, and migrant workers comprised at least 40 percent of the total. By 2009, more than 75 percent of the city's employees were working for private and foreign companies, an increase of 8 percentage points since 2006.
