French-style villa perfect for romantic dining

In the mood for some romance in Shanghai? Dining at a century-old French-style building can be an experience to remember.

You can enjoy fine French dishes by romantic candlelight and take in garden views all at the same time at Shanghai Science Hall JE on Nanchang Road.

As a well-known heritage preservation building and the largest single French-style villa in the city, reaching more than 5,000 square meters, Shanghai Science Hall JE’s history can be traced back to the beginning of the last century. It was designed by French architects and built in 1914.

“After renovation, it has combined history with the contemporary. Every room has a strong sense of art: Chinese classical furniture full of artistic taste and European-style ornaments, which perfectly integrate ancient elegance with modern design,” said Justin Yu, public relations manager of Shanghai Science Hall JE.

“Right from the moment of your arrival, you will be impressed by the romantic touch and elegant interior decoration, all of which will ensure a quality time with family and friends,” Yu said.

The building includes Chinese restaurants, a French restaurant, Golden Big Hall, meeting rooms, multifunction rooms, a wine club, bar and VIP video room. Every room on the second floor has its own balcony, from which you can see the garden. People can taste traditional Cantonese, Shanghai, Beijing and French cuisines.

Villandry French Restaurant is a must-try. It is headed by Vincent Ren, who worked for many years in three-star Michelin restaurants in France, and the restaurant can accommodate 50 guests.

Ren received professional training in Western food at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Institute in the 1990s and became its first Chinese graduate. He once worked as a chef in top Western restaurants including the three-star Michelin restaurant Georges Blanc.

Until the end of December, diners can enjoy a set dinner of four courses at the preferential price of 333 yuan (US$54.67), 50 percent off.

The restaurant’s interior design is exquisite and elegant, not only including fashionable elements but also retaining the historical essence of this hundred-year-old French building and thus maintaining its original solemnity.

The artistic antique furniture, along with the typical European ornaments, creates an elegant ambiance that perfectly blends with modern designs.

Old pictures on the wall and glittering crystal lamps impart gentleness and dazzling beauty to the restaurant.

“The combination of colors in the interior design is considerably ingenious, and it matches uniquely stylish ornaments quite well, conveying the designers’ respect for history,” Yu said.

“The classical style that implies veiled elegance and vogue is pervasive in the interior space of the restaurant. They recreate the luxurious and tasteful French style.”

Beside the restaurant, there is a separate lounge. For relaxing after dinner, it could be a good choice.

“We want to bring a combination of history and modern times, together with the considerable service, delicious cuisine and the sense of art to people who get together here,” Yu said.

“I hope that the romantic atmosphere of Villandry French Restaurant and the classical French cuisine keep exciting customers’ tastebuds.”

It is also a good place for afternoon tea, meetings and even an option for holding weddings.

The foreign-style villa plus an outdoor garden of 2,000 square meters, and a 400-seat ballroom with stage, can be decorated for almost any function.
