Heat washed off by sudden downpour

A heavy thunderstorm swept through the city this afternoon, bringing temporary cool relief to local residents as temperature dropped from 37 degrees Celsius to 28.5 degrees, weathermen said.

The rainstorm started in the downtown areas around 12pm and lasted nearly two hours. The city's outlying Baoshan, Minhang, Jiading, Qingpu and Pudong districts also reported heavy downpour. Precipitation recorded at Hongkou and Yangpu districts reached 65.1 millimeters.

In another development, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said the main weather station in downtown Xujiahui is the best of the stations in the city in a response to public doubts expressed online that temperature readings from the Xujiahui station often seemed lower than what they felt.

The bureau said their methods meet the standards of the World Meteorological Organization.

Temperature measuring has to meet three conditions: a ventilated place; an elevation of 1.5 meters above the ground, and a surface covered with lawn, explained Li Jinyu, an official with the bureau.

Li said the meteorological station in Xujiahui represents temperature in natural conditions, but he gave no further details.
