Bus stops planned near stations

The city’s traffic bosses are working on a plan to ensure that every Metro stations has a bus stop within 50 meters of it.

It is the latest effort by the city to address the “last kilometer” commuting problem, according to Sun Jianping, chief of Shanghai Transport and Port Administration.

The “last kilometer” usually refers to the bus routes that connect Metro stations to residential areas. Authorities are focusing on this segment in an attempt to promote the use of public transport by the locals.

Plans are also afoot to build more P+R, or Park and Ride, parking spaces at major Metro junctions and terminal stations, as well as taxi parking areas to improve Shanghai’s public transport system.

Sun said local traffic authorities are working on a color-based warning system, similar to the ones issued by the meteorological bureau, to warn people of traffic jams, accidents, etc.

The warnings will be issued in yellow, orange and red colors that will highlight the exactness of the traffic moments and other incidences on the road.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai Transport and Port Administration are cooperating with police to figure out a way to deal with errant drivers caught driving on the bus-only lanes.

Currently, drivers spotted occupying the bus lanes are fined  200 yuan (US$32.7), which many people claim is not a deterrent enough for other drivers.

“A fine is not enough. Drivers should also face deduction of points on their licenses,” said Sun, adding that a more severe penalty for violating rules will ensure the efficiency of the 161-km-long bus-only lanes.

Additional surveillance cameras have also been fitted on bus routes No. 127 and 43 to deter vehicles from jamming up the lanes during rush hours.

The bus-only lanes in the city are off-limits to other vehicles during the morning and afternoon rush hours.
