2 killed, 46 injured in gas explosion in Hangzhou
TWO people were killed and 46 injured in a gas explosion this morning in Hangzhou City, capital of east China’s Zhejiang Province.
The gas explosion happened in a street-side store at 8:40am in Xihu District, the local government said.
The powerful blast ripped off the store front and shattered the glass of passing vehicles and buses.
One of the victims, identified as Song Jiaying, was just 23 years old. Today was her third day of work after recently graduating with a postgraduate degree from a university in Macau — she died on her way to the office while on a bus directly in front of the explosion.
Her father, Song Qing, hopes the local government is paying close attention and that they notify relatives of the deceased to let them know what to do next.
Another victim was a passerby.
Among the injured, seven are in a critical condition. They have been sent to local hospitals for treatment.
A preliminary investigation showed bottled liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was blamed for the blast.
Traffic around the scene has resumed, although crowds of onlookers are causing traffic to slow to a crawl.
Shattered glass has been reported to still be present in the surrounding area.
