Clear walkway on highground above cliff attracts thousands

IN China's Hebei province, a glass walkway perched atop a cliff at an altitude of 1,900 meters opened to the public last week, attracting thousands. Photos taken of the site have gone viral on the web with many tourists showing signs of cold feet.
It is not for the fainthearted, or those with a phobia of heights. But for a walk with a view, tourists can strut along a glass corridor across the Baishishan Mountain, above a 1,900-meter high cliff right below their feet.
The 2-meter wide skywalk is supported by a concrete frame, and each square meter of the special 3.2-centimeter thick glass can support up to a ton in weight.
Many who step onto the 95 meter path are struck by fear, clinging onto mountain rocks on the sides, some even crawl on fours.
Since the walkway opened on September 15, it has attracted an average of 2,000 people daily seeking a thrill looking down under their feet.
Traffic even exceeded 12,000 over one weekend, the maximum number of visitors allowed for the scenic area.
"We deployed several emergency shuttles to evacuate the tourists. And we stopped selling tickets immediately after we found out that there were too many people inside," Feng Jie, marketing director of Baishishan Mountain Scenic Area, said.
While it is certainly an experience like no other, authorities have cautioned those with high blood pressure or poor heart conditions to stay away.
