CHINESE film "The Promised Land" has premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Meanwhile, Johnny Depp was there to promote his latest picture, "Black Mass," he and took the opportunity to meet his fans.
Film director He Ping came to prominence with his historical dramas "The Swordsman in Double Flag Town" and "Sun Valley." But "Promised Land" is his first film set in the present. It is about two young and ambitious souls: Wang Jiajia stars as a ballet dancer, and Zhang Yi as a hockey player. Their romance blossoms amid great social change in China, as young people leave their villages and small towns and flock to big cities such as Beijing.
Depp was also at the festival for his latest work, "Black Mass". It is based on the true story of Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger, who made a deal with the FBI to inform on his rivals, the Italian mob.
Australian actor Joel Edgerton plays FBI agent John Connolly.
"I just dove into working on trying to find John's voice, you know, because I had recordings of it. It's the hardest I've ever worked at an accent in my life. I believe as an actor you've got a responsibility to get it right, or at least to getting close to getting it right as you can. And all I can hope for is getting it as right as I possibly can," Edgerton said.
Dakota Johnson, who plays the mother of Bulger's son, describes "Whitey" as a monster.
"You try to comprehend why he would make certain decisions, and you can't really. I think there are—in the script, in the story—there are moments when you think he is a very diabolical person," Johnson said.
Kevin Bacon, who plays FBI agent Charles McGuire, says he was familiar with the story before taking on the role.
"I read the book and I read the script. I heard when I was off doing the movie 'Mystic River' in Boston, I'd heard stories about the story of the Bulgers. One of the pieces that I found so fascinating was that Jimmy and Billy being brothers, one becomes a politician, a pillar of the community, and the other is simultaneously being a gangster. I thought that was really kind of fascinating, almost Shakespearean kind of vibe," Bacon said.
"Black Mass" opens Friday in the US and Canada.
