Xi, Mugabe eye practical cooperation

CHINESE President Xi Jinping is on his first state visit to Zimbabwe where he has held talks in the State House with his counterpart Robert Mugabe. The two sides agreed to translate their time-honored friendship into stronger impetus for bilateral practical cooperation, so as to achieve common development and prosperity.
During a state banquet held by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Chinese President Xi Jinping said the two sides will continue to support each other and pursue win-win cooperation and common development.
"My visit this time is about friendship and cooperation. Earlier today, President Mugabe and I held comprehensive and fruitful talks and we reached a lot of new and important agreements on promoting bilateral relations. We agreed that both countries should make full use of the political trust and economic complementarity between us to translate our friendship into cooperation and the impetus for common development and friendship," Xi said.
President Xi said that China stands ready to shift bilateral economic and trade cooperation towards manufacturing, investments and management and the country will encourage more Chinese enterprises to invest in Zimbabwe.
The Chinese president also suggested that the two sides maintain high-level contact and boost people-to-people exchanges.
Mugabe, for his part, said his country hopes to learn from China's experience in socio-economic development, receive more assistance from China, and expand bilateral cooperation in such fields as agriculture, industry and infrastructure.
"We greatly appreciate the understanding and flexibility shown by China. It is precise...precisely that empathetic approach based on principled solidarity and genuine friendship which is accelerating our recovery from the debilitating sanctions,"Mugabe said.
After their talks, the two presidents witnessed the signing of a bilateral economic and technological cooperation agreement and a series of other deals covering such fields as infrastructure construction, production capacity, investment and financing.
President Xi arrived in Zimbabwe on Tuesday. He was warmly welcomed by Zimbabwe's President and high-ranking officials with a 21-gun salute at the Harare International Airport.
He then toured a national heroes' shrine where Zimbabwe's war dead are remembered.
The visit comes upon the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It's the first state visit by a Chinese president to Zimbabwe since 1996.
