A mother was captured stepping on her two-year-old daughter in the street in Xiaoshan, Zhejiang Province, on May 9.
The woman, 36, can be seen sitting while arguing with onlookers and her child lying on her face on the ground, crying.
When a man tried to pick up the distressed girl, the woman rushed to the kid with anger and stepped on her back.
After the video circulated online on May 11, many netizens were shocked and angry and called police.
The local police quickly launched an investigation, but by then the woman had left Xiaoshan to Huaihua, in Hunan Province.
Police contacted the woman's ex-husband who said the girl in the video was the younger daughter who lives with her mother after they divorced two years ago. Another daughter lives with him.
The woman had no mobile phone, so he hadn’t known her hereabouts since then. He felt heartbroken after watching the video and was trying to gain custody of the child.
Police also went to the woman's home in Xinhuang County where they only saw her parents. The father told police the woman had moved out with the girl in February after had a quarrel with him.
With the help of the local public security bureau, Xiaoshan police finally found the woman in a mountain village.
The single mother told police she had seen "everyone as the enemy" the day of the incident.
Down to her last just over 10 yuan, she had spent the whole day looking for a job but she was rejected by all employers because of the childcare issue.
Both she and her daughter felt extremely tired and hungry. So when the girl spat out the first bite of the sausage she had spent 2 yuan on, the woman's mood totally collapsed. She scolded her daughter and pushed her to the ground.
Then onlookers criticized her behavior so she argued with them. When a man wanted to comfort her daughter, the woman who was still in a huff suddenly broke out and rushed to step her child.
The woman said she had lived a tough life since her divorce. Apart from the 600 yuan living expenses her ex-husband supplied every month, she almost had no income. After she left home at the beginning of the year, she had been moving from place to place with her daughter and often slept on the street.
She wanted to find a job and raise her daughter properly but was always rejected. When she felt at her most desperate, she even thought of committing suicide — with her daughter.
She admitted she often scolded and smacked her daughter when the little girl was naughty. But she said she quickly regretted doing this every time and “even wanted to stab herself to death with a knife.”
She knew she shouldn't abuse her child no matter how bad her mood was and how tough living things were.
The woman realized her fault and promised she would not beat the girl any more.
Now police have brought the mother and her daughter back to Xiaoshan where they are staying in a hotel while the authorities help her to find work.
Her ex-husband also now says he will not pursue legal action over the incident.
