An estranged couple both ended up in hospital after an argument over money culminated in a brawl.
The man in the relationship, Mr Wu, had demanding over a quarter of million yuan from his girlfriend, Ms Liu, after she ended their relationship.
The couple, both from Nanchang, had been dating for 8 years and even had a wedding ceremony in their hometown without getting a formal marriage certificate.
But Liu felt the relationship she shared with her boyfriend had become unstable because she worked out of town and decided to break up with Wu. Yet Liu was shocked to Wu’s reaction to her decision when he turned up on her doorstep with a price list and demanded a break-up fee of more than 260,000 yuan, on June 25.
On the list, Wu included fees for the couple’s wedding ceremony, gifts for the bride before the celebration, as well as other petty bills for groceries and snacks such as candies and milk powder. An angry Liu confronted Wu over the list and, after a big fight, both ended up being treated at the hospital. The row even spilled over in the hospital when both sets of families met up to visit the injured pair. The police had to be called to intervene and they eventually brought peace to the warring families.
The unusual story soon sparked a frenzy of activity on social media with opinions split on both sides.
Most netizens believed that Liu was correct to “break up” with Wu, while others said asking for money to be repaid from the wedding ceremony and bride’s gifts were “reasonable” as the two were no longer getting married.
