Police have determined that two female riders on electric scooters and a man in a car involved in an accident both have to take collective responsibility.
The collision triggered a fierce debate on social media as to who was at fault for the incident that happened in Taozhou Town of Guangde County, in Anhui Province, on June 20.
A traveling data recorder, installed on the car, revealed that the two female riders, on separate vehicles, were moving forward from left to right on the road, before falling off their electric scooters, one after another, when the a car drove towards a T junction and stopped.
The driver, surnamed Xiao, remained in his vehicle, as the girls dusted themselves down, because he was worried he might be blackmailed for compensation. He waited for the scooter riders to pick themselves up before driving away himself.
Xiao received a call from the traffic police at 8pm on the same day, as one of the riders reported the incident, saying he didn’t sound a horn to alert them he was turning left. One of the riders is back home after treatment while the other one is still in hospital.
After the investigation, the county’s traffic police confirmed that all three people should share responsibility for the accident. They determined Xiao failed to slow down when moving towards the junction and also confirmed that the two riders failed to ensure safe driving at a road without any traffic signals.
The decision brought a mixed reaction online. Some netizens believed Xiao should not take any responsibility while others said the vehicle’s recorder played an important role in determining the outcome of the accident. Xiao said the incident would be significant to drivers in such conditions in the future.
